Fungi that eats plastic

That’s right, a Yale Student recently discovered a fungi that eats plastic. Further reinforcing the idea that shrooms and fungi can save the world.

Here’s a picture of one of this fungi’s fellow genus members:

The fungi is called Pestalotiopsis microspora. It and its fellow genus members spend most of their time living within plants often without causing any apparent disease. Scientists are a little confused about this relationship. But there is more surprise about the fact that this fungi can eat plastic.

This is causing great speculation about the potential use of this fungi as a trash eater; as well as concerns about it eating too much of our plastic goods like what happened in the movie Andromeda Strain.

Overall this fungi is a very exciting discovery as it can survive in an environment without air or water feasting only upon plastic.
